Updated Dutch Dietary Guidelines recommend higher nuts consumption

23 APRIL 2026

On April 9th, the Dutch Nutrition Centre published the updated version of the ''Wheel of Five'' (Schijf van Vijf). The guide provides evidence-based advice to help people to eat healthy, sustainable and safe. This update mainly reduces animal products, increases plant-based foods, and integrates sustainability and safety into the dietary advice making environmental impact due to greenhouse gas emissions and water use a core pillar.

The main changes are below:

-Legumes, tofu, and tempeh: increased from 120-180 to 250 grams per week. Falafel and hummus also count.

-Meat: decreased from a maximum of 500 to a maximum of 300 grams per week, of which no more than 100 grams is red meat. And as little processed meat as possible, such as cold cuts.

-Dairy: cheese decreased from 40 grams to 20 grams per day. Additional recommendation to alternate between dairy and fortified dairy alternatives.

-Unsalted nuts: increased from 25 g/day to 30 g/day. Nuts are emphasised by the Nutrition centre as source of minerals, vitamins, and unsaturated fat.

The Nutrition Centre also highlights that government, producers and providers play an important role in making healthy, sustainable and safe choices more accessible.
